Acknowledgement Workflow Question

For the proof of concept, the decision is not to send an asynchronous response to an acknowledgement request and to only return the synchronous response as defined for the message response in the IAB eBusiness Technical specifications.

If there is a problem  with the acknowledgement XML, such as bad XML, message id being acknowledged doesn't exist, there is no method of responding electronically with the current workflow.  Is this acceptable?  Does the workflow need to change?  Any suggestions on how this information can be returned electronically?
